TAXES

Taxes: Are They Needed?
Through out the years, people have always complained that they have to pay too 
many taxes. But in reality, the government needs those taxes. I agree with Oliver 
Wendall Holmes when he said " Taxes are what we pay for a civilized society". It takes 
tax money to insure a safe and productive society. The taxes people pay are always used 
for the good of the public, most people don't know what all is paid for by taxes. Taxes 
pay for everything from education to the pavement of the highways.
At the state level, taxes help pay for our highway system. These highways allow 
our society to function in a beneficial manner. If we didn't have efficient roadways, 
goods couldn't be delivered and our society wouldn't be as advanced as we are today. 
Everything we buy has be transported from somewhere. Having taxes keep our 
highways in suitable condition insures the safety of the people.
Both state and local taxes aid in the education of our children. Every year taxes 
are used to help repair old school buildings and help buy new modern equipment. 
Without this help, our schools would be left in the dark ages without the essential 
equipment that is needed to help the kids perform to their best ability. When children 
are taught in an exceptional environment, the results are having superior leaders in 
our society when they get older. 
A significant amount of tax money is used by our national defense. Though out 
the years the amount of money used by the defense has gone down but it still uses a 
tremendous amount of money. With our national defense being one of the best in the 
world, most citizens feel safe. They don't worry about attacks from other countries. In 
other countries the residents feel unsafe in their homeland. I wouldn't want to live a
life 
where I was afraid of what was going to happen next to my country.
A lot of people (including me) don't like having to pay a sales tax on everything 
they buy. They feel the price on the tag should be the price they pay. But if they did 
enough research they would learn that every state has a different way of taxing their 
citizens, but it is necessary. If we didn't have taxes our society would be
underdeveloped 
and wouldn't be working at its potential.
Taxes also help us prepare for the future. Every year the population of our 
country increases and When people pay social security, they are preparing for their 
retirement. When they get older they will have money to live on without having to work. 
This is very important to the older generation in our country. 
In conclusion, I think Mr. Holmes was a very smart man when he said we need 
taxes. I hate to admit it that taxes are needed but in reality they are. Hopefully in the

future the government will find another way to get money rather than taxes. But until 
then we will have to continue to pay.
